Quite a lot was asked of this space, which luckily, had a lot to give back. Double kitchen doors lead directly out to a south-facing garden of just over fifteen meters. The bottom of the garden looks across a broad wooded railway cutting, with an annexed area at right angles to the rest.
The south-facing aspect of this London garden design leant itself to Mediterranean style planting, but not too stylized as I did not wish to lose context with the British native shrubs and trees in the railway cutting. An Olive tree and some Cypress firs stand over large drifts of green grasses.

The customer wanted a place to relax and entertain their friends, and also have an office and treatment room in the annexed area. The basic idea of the design is for a generous eating terrace leading from the kitchen, looking over a central multi-functional area; a route round the edge of which would take you to the treatment room. The central area, in the shade of the Olive tree, has a modular sofa set which can be rearranged to suit the users activities at any time, and a hammock can be suspended across the space for really relaxing.
I used standing posts to make low screens so one can always see through to the next space but the boundaries are clear. The largest posts in the middle of the garden mark the inside line of the curved path to the treatment room and also support the hammock.
