TOWN GARDEN - PUTNEY

.

At only 2.4 meters wide, this London garden design was pretty tricky. For this to be really successful I had to get my clients using the whole fifteen-meter length of this north-facing corridor and not just moving straight up and down it.

The patio near the house offers a convenient BBQ and eating area, so I needed something to draw the client up to the end of the garden. I decided an intimate seating area with a gas fire pit would do just that. Better still I hoped it would have all year appeal, really maximizing the use of the garden. The feature log-wall serves as a screen for the gas bottle and also hides a boiler flue, which comes out of the end wall. There is also a bit more room behind there for general storage too.

The mid section of the garden has been peppered with clipped spheres, which one has to wind through on the journey between the two social areas of the garden. This introduces a bit more movement to the garden and widens the space.

A simple pallet of greens freshens the garden, but when Autumn comes, an Acer by the patio, and Himalayan Birch at the far end, will bring it alive with vivid red and yellow for a real seasonal change.

A new fence down the right side of the garden is linked with a low brick wall, and the fence posts left deliberately proud of the fence and trellis in order to remove long lines and distract from the narrowness.

I used imitation grass for the mid section, facilitating the planting which would otherwise be completely impractical in a real turf lawn. Real turf would also fail for lack of light, and storing a mower would take up precious room.
