This was an unusual project as the client was not interested in a separate terrace, or planting beds. They are also away for a month at a time several times a year. I defined areas using ground pattern and different textures. Effectively the whole floor space is terrace, right up to the edges.
The wide spacing between the paving, and use of imitation grass means rainwater drains quickly, into the ground below. Because of this quick drying the kids can go out to play much more often, and there is no surface run off to deal with. While meeting my clients brief, I have also clearly defined an ample eating terrace on which a table and chairs will safely stand, extending the gardens use beyond the current family, safeguarding their investment. |
The bespoke fence design allows it to become immersed in planting from both sides, anchoring it to its surroundings. We have used the same material for the paving as the surfaces in the kitchen, which opens out onto the garden. Indeed the style of the garden takes its cue from the industrial style of the kitchen extension, further extending it. Carefully choosing and placing the trees has punctuated the geometry with just the right weight of softness to bridge the gap from the architecture to its setting.
