COURTYARD GARDEN - WESTBOURNE GROVE

.

This garden had been paved edge, to edge, sloping into the middle of the space, with no drainage. I was charged with the task of introducing drainage, and reducing the hard surface area, and creating something more dynamic with this courtyard garden design.

Some raised beds were constructed, and the ground level was punctuated with blocks of clipped box hedging, reaching into the space from the edges; gently implying the different areas. I installed a micro irrigation system to regulate watering and safeguard the planting in pots and raised beds, which have little soil-surface area to catch rainfall. The watering system and slow-growing plant choices make maintenance only necessary on a quarterly basis. The ground level planting caught run-off from the tiles, helping to reduce the amount lost to the drains, and stabilize the ground beneath.

A place for coffee under the shade of a large, clipped shrub. A barbeque and eating area in the open space looking back onto the house, and two sun drenched loungers either side of a bespoke drinks table. The limited planting pallet gives a clean, crisp feel to this courtyard garden design and suited the client’s interior and lifestyle.
