Annie asked me to give her garden a bit more purpose and direction. As a plant lover she could never let a plant go, but it was the layout she inherited which really let the space down. Central steps up from a patio abandoned you in the middle of the garden with nowhere to go. I decided, after I had dealt with the layout, I would consolidate the plants and flowers Annie had. Some would have to go, others would be increased in number, and I would introduce one or two new species. These measures gave the planting more harmony, and the reduced pallet would simplify the workload meaning Annie could give more time to her allotment.

The remedy for the layout was to dramatically widen the steps up, and give a choice of destination from the top. Across the pond one can enjoy the herbaceous boarders from the new lawn. Or to the right, the gravel terrace catches the sunshine and is also the productive corner of the garden, including herbs, fruit trees and a raised salad bed. The salad bed has a sliding prep table attached, making sewing and cropping much more convenient, with a work surface always to hand.
Annie can sit on the gravel terrace and look across the pond to the ‘box balls’, which give the darker corner of the garden some drama and a reliable year round display.
